Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

General Manager to oversee and manage port operations in Luanda, Angola. This role involves overseeing a wide range of port operations including container handling, general cargo, bulk cargo, logistics, and RoRo, ensuring efficiency, safety, and excellence in all areas. The successful candidate will drive business growth through strategic initiatives, client relationship management, and staff development, while optimizing performance, increasing revenue, and positioning the port as a regional leader in the industry.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Core Responsibilities:

  • Oversee terminal operations across various cargo types, ensuring service quality, efficiency, and alignment with international standards.
  • Manage day-to-day operations, including berthing strategies, resource allocation, and adherence to quality and safety policies.
  • Develop and enforce operational procedures to optimize the use of infrastructure, manpower, and ensure cost-effectiveness.

Strategic Responsibilities:

  • Conduct operational assessments and implement strategies to position the port as a regional leader through service expansion, infrastructure improvement, and innovation.
  • Lead redevelopment initiatives to establish world-class infrastructure while managing transitions with minimal disruption.
  • Collaborate with leadership to align operations with Abu Dhabi Ports’ vision, drive profitability, and ensure long-term growth and sustainability.
  • Develop and execute strategic plans, including budgeting, financial forecasting, and investment planning, while fostering innovation and improving KPI-driven performance.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations and agreements while managing risks across operations, finance, and strategy, aligning with Abu Dhabi Ports Group’s policies.
  • Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including government authorities and industry leaders, to enhance market position and align efforts with port objectives.
  • Represent the organization in negotiations and collaborations, driving long-term business strategy and operational excellence.

People Management Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership to promote a culture of excellence, innovation, and compliance, aligned with ADPG values and global standards.
  • Drive employee development through training, ethical practices, and talent acquisition to meet organizational and client needs.
  • Ensure operational efficiency, safety, and financial alignment with regional norms while fostering high employee morale and productivity.

Desired candidate profile

Educational and Technical Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Maritime, or Industrial) or related fields.
  • Master’s degree in business administration (MBA), Port Management, Maritime Studies, or Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

Specialized Education/Certifications:

  • Port and Terminal Operations Management Certification (e.g., from IAPH or similar institutions).
  • Supply Chain and Logistics Certification (e.g., CILT, APICS).
  • Safety and Environmental Management Certifications (e.g., NEBOSH, ISO standards).
  • Project Management Certification (e.g., PMP, PRINCE2) for overseeing port redevelopment or operational improvements.
  • International Maritime Organization (IMO) Compliance Training related to safety, security, and environmental standards.
  • Knowledge of different business functions of Marine terminals.
  • Ability to work with a proactive nature and global environment and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with maritime laws and customs regulations.
  • Knowledge of global shipping, trade, and logistics trends.
  • Proficiency in port management software and tools.

Language Skills:

  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken) & Proficiency in Portuguese (written and spoken).
  • Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the region will be advantageous.

Years & Nature of Experiences:

  • Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in a similar role within the ports, maritime, or logistics sector.
  • At least 5-7 years in a senior leadership or management position, overseeing operations, strategic planning, and team leadership.
  • Proven track record in international Port Operations Management, including container, general cargo, bulk cargo, project cargo, logistics, and RoRo.
  • Experience in overseeing major port redevelopment or infrastructure improvement projects.
  • Previous experience in Africa Region or emerging markets will be a plus.
