Shift Operator
Location - Bucks
Shift - 12 hour shifts.
Salary - £43,600
Reporting to Operations and Shift Manager

Main purpose and scope of job

Acting under the direction of the Shift Manager the Shift Operator will ensure safe and efficient operation of all production activities at the plant. To include a high-pressure Boiler, Balance of Plant, Steam Turbine and Generator and site support functions. Additional duties will include supporting the site maintenance team with front-line plant fault diagnosis, maintenance, and repair work.
In doing so they will be promoting a culture of maximum plant reliability, flexibility, and availability. This is to be achieved whilst attaining high standards of Safety, Quality, Health & Environmental performance.

Duties and key responsibilities - SHEQ

Responsible for personal safety and that of all personnel under their authority, including others who may be affected by the company's activities. In particular:

  • Application of SHEQ Policies and Procedures
  • Participate in Health, Safety and Environment initiatives and forums.
  • Application of Safety Rules to the level of Authorised Person
  • Conduct task and area risk assessments as directed by the Shift Manager
  • Provide written work method instructions and procedures outlining potential hazards and precautions, whilst ensuring compliance
  • Ensure all accidents, incident, dangerous occurrence, and near-miss reporting processes are carried out and assist with required incident investigations.
  • Support management compliance with recognised standards and maintain the site integrated management system.


Duties and key responsibilities - Operational

  • Working within a small team with the focus on motivation and people's values
  • Maintain and develop industrial relations through effective communications.
  • Communicate effectively with other departments within the plant/business.
  • Carry out routine plant inspections and adjustments / operations as required collecting and recording plant data.
  • Full understanding of P&IDs.
  • Carrying out Operational Procedures to ensure that plant is in a fit and correct state for return to service following maintenance, outage, or another prolonged shutdown.
  • Responding to first line and breakdown maintenance requirements as far as background and experience permits. Assisting maintenance functions in any such maintenance.
  • Undertake continuing personal development to enhance knowledge & skills relevant to the role.
  • Writing/amending site Operational procedures and risk assessments, implementing changes and improvements as required ensuring all procedures are relevant and accurate.
  • Carrying out simple analysis of water steam cycle chemistry and implementing corrective actions to dosing and blow down systems.
  • Shift logging to ensure quality defect reporting and writing along with the reviewing of operational work specifications.
  • Assist in the annual outage planning, scheduling, co-ordination, and execution process which may require extended working hours and an amended working pattern to suit the business needs.
  • Able to safely operate a Counterbalance Forklift Truck, Telehandler, and grab crane. (Training will be offered to suitable candidates).

Experience
Process industry experience or knowledge of power generation operations and maintenance associated with steam turbines, boilers, balance of plant, electrical generation and distribution, plant control and instrumentation.

  • Experience preferred in aspects of EfW and Materials Recycling Facility plant operations.
  • Technical knowledge or experience in a relevant engineering discipline
  • Working knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental legislation
  • Ability to understand P&ID's and/or functional diagrams.
  • Working experience with a CMMS and DCS systems preferred


Essential Knowledge

  • A good understanding of HSE aspects is a fundamental requirement, IOSH managing safely is preferable.
  • City and Guilds/NVQ Level 3 in process/thermal production / operations or agreed combination of technical qualification and experience.
  • At least 3 years' experience in power generation/process industry operations and/or maintenance role.
  • Experience of working in a technically challenging environment.
