The Infection Control Consultant in the Infection Prevention & Control Department has the day-to-day responsibility for planning, coordinating, and improving clinical care and services at the hospital and in the clinics with a focus on infection prevention and control. The Infection Control Consultant has the day-to-day responsibility for implementing the hospital and clinic-wide Infection Prevention & Control Program. This role combines the clinical expertise required to change practice with the leadership skills to influence clinical processes, systems, and outcomes. The Infection Control consultant identifies opportunities for organizational wide infection prevention improvements based upon evidence-based practices, regulatory and accrediting agency requirements, and data analysis of high risk, high volume infection prevention prone activities.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts ongoing surveillances of healthcare associated infections as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, by reviewing microbiology laboratory results and pertinent clinical data in the medical records and by consultation with staff and physicians.
  • Performs, coordinates, and facilitates multi-disciplinary and interdepartmental efforts to improve performance of infection prevention/control programs and services.
  • Monitors microbiology reports for clustering of organisms, unusual pathogens or infections that require special precautions or notification to public health authorities.
  • Maintains accurate, timely records of epidemiologic investigations, surveillance data and problems requiring resolution by the IPCD.
  • Prepares and presents formal and informal educational meetings regarding the principles of infection control.
  • Reports reportable diseases to county health departments not previously reported by other persons or departments in the hospital.
  • Demonstrates and maintains a technical knowledge of nursing practices, hospital epidemiology, clinical microbiology, clinical infectious diseases, and performance improvement methodologies.
  • Keeps informed of new developments in infection control by regularly reviewing current literature and attending seminars, conferences or workshops on topics pertinent to infection prevention.
  • Performs Infection Control Risk Assessment for both new and existing facility construction projects.
  • Evaluates data, makes judgments, and recommendations regarding infection prevention quality improvement work.
  • Designs and develops infection prevention dashboards and other innovative data visualization using business intelligence tools.
  • Identifies the appropriate use of infection prevention quality improvement tools and methodologies, such as PDCA and Statistical Process Control analysis.
  • Leads multidisciplinary and multi-departmental strategic initiatives focused on prevention of healthcare associated infections (HAIs).
  • Performs data analysis; creates & interprets data displays.
  • Presents and interprets, as pertinent, the results of surveillance, special projects, outbreak/cluster investigations or exposure data to the Department Manager, Medical Director, Infection Control Committee (ICC), and other pertinent committees and departments.
  • Meets regularly with members of the Infection Control Team to share information, provide updates and problem solve.
  • Attends hospital committee meetings which require IPCD input (e.g., Environmental Health and Safety Committees, Materials Council, VAT etc.).
  • Recommends, implements, monitors and evaluates appropriate interventions for the prevention of transmission of healthcare associated infections.
  • Identifies and assists in the resolution of infection transmission risks to patients or personnel.
  • Participates in the review of Infection Prevention and Control Standards of Care policy and procedure manuals for assigned patient care areas.
  • Enters per protocol orders for initiation and discontinuation of isolation; enters Careplans as needed.
  • Provides patient education on isolation precautions as requested by nursing.
  • Formulates and executes an effective communicable disease outbreak and exposure control plan as the need arises.
  • Provides expertise in the interpretation, implementation, and maintenance of standards to match external requirements (e.g. The Joint commission, CMS, Title 22).
  • Provides Leadership for creating a culture of patient safety in the area of infection prevention and works with instructional leadership to implement culture change.
  • Participates as a voting member of the ICC.
  • Reviews and revises IPCD policies and procedures as needed.
  • Determines industry trends and infection prevention quality improvement projects impact the hospital and considers involvement in them.
  • Together with the Infection Prevention & Control Dept. Director, acts as a liaison and consults with management, staff, physicians and other healthcare professionals as well as the community on Infection Prevention and Control issues and concerns.
  • Considers age-specific needs when interacting with patients and families.
  • Effectively communicates and interacts with patients, families, staff, and members of the community from diverse backgrounds.
  • Performs other related and incidental duties as needed or assigned.


Requirements

Education

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science (or higher) degree in Nursing (BSN).


Licenses and Certifications
  • RN - Registered Nurse

Experience
  • Three (3) or more years of nursing experience, preferentially including or supplemented by:
  • Six (6) or more months of professional experience in infection prevention and control in an acute care hospital OR
  • Certified-in-Infection Control (CIC or A-IPC) by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc. (CBIC) at the time of appointment. OR
  • Recent participation on an infection prevention and control task force in an acute care hospital

Knowledge/Skills & Abilities:
  • Knowledge in specialty area of practice
  • Knowledge of computer systems and software used in assigned work area
