BLOW MOULDING MACHINE OPERATOR

Job Description KRA & KPI

Department: Production
Position: Blow Moulding Machine Operator
Reports To: Production Supervisor / Production Manager
Location: Plastic Manufacturing Plant
Process: Extrusion Blow Moulding (EBM)
Shift: Rotational Shift

1. Job Purpose

To operate blow moulding machines safely and efficiently ensuring continuous production of good-quality HDPE bottles/jerry cans as per approved specifications while achieving production targets minimum rejection optimum material consumption and safe working practices.

2. Key Responsibilities

A. Machine Operation

  • Operate EBM/blow moulding machines as per approved SOP and work instructions.

  • Start stop and change over machines as per standard procedure.

  • Monitor machine parameters such as:

    • Extruder temperature

    • Die/head temperature

    • Parison programming

    • Extrusion speed/RPM

    • Blow pressure

    • Cooling-water temperature

    • Mould opening/closing

    • Cycle time

    • Cutting/deflashing parameters

  • Maintain the approved process parameters for each product.

  • Carry out product changeover according to the production plan.

  • Ensure correct mould neck insert colour/masterbatch and raw material are being used.

B. Quality Control

  • Produce bottles/cans according to approved drawing specification and sample.

  • Check product periodically for:

    • Weight

    • Dimensions

    • Appearance

    • Wall thickness

    • Flash

    • Neck/finish condition

    • Handle condition

    • Leakage

    • Deformation

    • Short shot/poor formation

    • Black spots/contamination

    • Colour variation

  • Immediately segregate defective products.

  • Inform the Supervisor and QC Inspector about any abnormality.

  • Maintain first-off approval after mould/changeover and after major parameter changes.

C. Production & Productivity

  • Achieve the assigned production target.

  • Maintain optimum cycle time without compromising quality.

  • Minimize machine stoppages and unnecessary idle time.

  • Control start-up and changeover rejection.

  • Ensure proper utilization of raw material.

  • Maintain product weight within approved tolerance.

  • Report production quantity and rejection quantity accurately.

D. Machine & Mould Care

  • Perform routine operator-level machine checks.

  • Check oil leakage water leakage abnormal noise vibration and temperature.

  • Keep mould die head and machine area clean.

  • Ensure proper cooling-water circulation.

  • Report mould damage cutter problems hydraulic/pneumatic issues and other abnormalities to Maintenance.

  • Do not make unauthorized mechanical/electrical modifications.

E. Safety / HSE

  • Follow all plant safety rules and machine-specific HSE procedures.

  • Wear required PPE.

  • Never bypass safety guards interlocks or emergency-stop systems.

  • Keep hands away from moving moulds cutting units and hot surfaces.

  • Follow LOTO procedure during maintenance intervention.

  • Immediately report unsafe conditions near misses and incidents.

  • Maintain good housekeeping around the machine.

F. Documentation

Maintain/complete:

  • Production report

  • Rejection report

  • Machine parameter sheet

  • Start-up checklist

  • Hourly production record

  • Raw material consumption record

  • Changeover checklist

  • Quality inspection record

  • Breakdown information

  • Shift handover report

3. Required Qualification
  • ITI / Diploma preferred in Plastic.

  • Plastic Processing / Mechanical / Electrical qualification preferred.

  • Minimum 25 years experience in blow moulding operations preferred.

  • Experience with HDPE/PP extrusion blow moulding will be an advantage.

4. Required Technical Knowledge

Operator should understand:

  • EBM machine operation

  • Extruder and die-head operation

  • Parison programming

  • Blow pressure

  • Mould cooling

  • Hydraulic/pneumatic systems basic understanding

  • Product weight control

  • Basic troubleshooting

  • Defect identification

  • Raw material identification

  • Masterbatch/colour dosing

  • Basic quality inspection instruments
