Roles and responsibilities
1. System Design and Specification
- Designing ELV Systems: Creating technical specifications and designs for various ELV systems such as CCTV, fire alarms, PA (Public Address) systems, access control, intercoms, building management systems (BMS), and structured cabling.
- System Integration: Ensuring that all ELV systems (security, communication, and automation) work seamlessly together and are integrated into the building's overall design.
- Compliance with Standards: Ensuring the design of ELV systems complies with local and international standards and codes (e.g., IEC 60364, BS 5839, NFPA, and local building codes).
2. Project Planning and Coordination
- Coordination with Other Teams: Collaborating with architects, electrical engineers, and other specialists to ensure that the ELV systems are planned and installed according to the project’s specifications.
- Site Surveys: Conducting site surveys to understand the requirements, challenges, and limitations of the location for the proper placement of ELV systems.
- System Sizing: Calculating the required capacity and infrastructure for each ELV system, ensuring that power and communication requirements are met.
3. Installation and Commissioning
- Installation Oversight: Overseeing the installation process of ELV systems, ensuring they are installed to specification, and coordinating with contractors and technicians.
- System Testing and Commissioning: Performing system checks and tests to ensure that all ELV systems are functional and compliant with design specifications. This may include testing alarms, cameras, access control devices, and network cabling.
- Troubleshooting: Identifying and resolving any issues that arise during installation and commissioning, ensuring that systems are functioning correctly before handover.
4. Maintenance and Support
- Regular Maintenance: Conducting periodic maintenance of ELV systems, ensuring they remain in good working condition and perform optimally throughout their lifecycle.
- Troubleshooting and Repair: Diagnosing and fixing any faults or issues that arise with ELV systems, including replacing defective equipment and restoring functionality.
- Upgrades and Modernization: Identifying opportunities for upgrading or modernizing ELV systems to incorporate new technologies or improve efficiency.
5. Documentation and Reporting
- Documentation: Preparing and maintaining documentation, including design drawings, equipment manuals, and as-built documentation, to ensure clarity on the system's operation and specifications.
- Compliance Reporting: Reporting on system performance and compliance with safety standards, ensuring that all installations are in line with local regulations.
