VIB is in search for a leader for its Science Policy team, reporting to the Managing Director.

Role purpose

Lead the Science Policy team of VIB, strengthen the quality of VIB science by fostering a stimulating environment for VIB research, and contribute to science policy initiatives on a local and international level.

Your role and responsibilities

VIB fosters great science by creating a stimulating environment for talent to excel.

• You will develop, maintain and implement the overall VIB science policy strategy in accordance with the scientific goals and strategies as defined in the VIB strategic plan;
• You will set up new institutional initiatives, for example, to stimulate collaborative, open, and FAIR science, in close collaboration with the research centers;
• You play an important role in the recruitment of new VIB group leaders in collaboration with the partner universities and the center directors;
• You are responsible for the organization of the 5-yearly peer review of the VIB research groups;
• You will actively research opportunities to set up strategic alliances with regional and international research institutions;
• You are responsible for the yearly reporting of VIB s performance towards the government through the production of high-quality reports and presentations;
• You will supervise the grants office, as well as regulatory affairs and research integrity-related activities;
• You will follow up on the regulatory environment and the research funding landscape.

Required knowledge and experience

• Ph.D. in life sciences or alike, ideally with a background in bio-molecular research;
• Significant experience in science policy activities as described above: modern research assessment practices for example as used in the international recruitment of group leaders and the monitoring of research practices, the stimulation of innovation, the local and international regulatory context and trends;
• Sound knowledge of the local and international research funding landscape;
• Capacity to lead and coach a team of science policy professionals;
• Proven track record in project management, as well as monitoring and evaluation methodologies;
• An innovative and service-driven mindset;
• Excellent skills in scientific reporting and writing;
• Excellent interpersonal skills, strong communicator;
• Proficiency in English.
