Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

  • Construction and Repair:
  • Perform carpentry work including the construction, installation, and repair of wooden structures, fixtures, furniture, and other related items within the hotel.
  • Assemble and install doors, windows, partitions, panels, shelves, and furniture as needed.
  • Maintenance:
  • Conduct regular inspections and preventative maintenance of all wooden structures and fixtures.
  • Repair or replace damaged or worn-out woodwork in guest rooms, public areas, and back-of-house facilities.
  • Custom Projects:
  • Execute custom carpentry projects as requested by the hotel management or the engineering team.
  • Work with designers and architects to bring bespoke designs to life within the hotel.
  • Safety and Compliance:
  • Ensure all carpentry work complies with local building codes, safety regulations, and hotel standards.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, and ensure all tools and equipment are properly stored and maintained.
  • Collaboration:
  • Work closely with other members of the engineering team, as well as other hotel departments, to coordinate projects and repairs.
  • Provide support and assistance to other trades as needed.
  • Guest Interaction:
  • Respond promptly to guest requests for maintenance services, ensuring minimal disruption to their stay.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous demeanor when interacting with guests and staff.

What We Need From You

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment and components.
  • Comfortable working in confined spaces and at heights.
  • Ability to work in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
  • Proven experience as a carpenter, preferably in a hotel or hospitality setting.
  • Strong knowledge of carpentry techniques, tools, and materials.
  • Experience with both rough and finish carpentry work.

Desired candidate profile

Construction and Installation

  • Furniture Construction: Building custom furniture such as desks, tables, cabinets, and shelves, either for the establishment's use (e.g., hotels or restaurants) or for guest rooms.
  • Structural Framework: Installing and maintaining structural elements like beams, rafters, and partitions.
  • Doors and Windows: Installing doors, windows, and frames, ensuring proper alignment, function, and security.
  • Cabinetry: Building and installing custom cabinetry, including kitchen, bathroom, or storage units.
  • Flooring Installation: Laying wooden floors, laminate, or parquet, ensuring that the finish is smooth, durable, and aesthetically appealing.

2. Repairs and Maintenance

  • Fixing Damaged Structures: Repairing damaged woodwork, such as broken door frames, furniture, or flooring.
  • Routine Maintenance: Ensuring that woodwork elements in the building are well-maintained, such as sanding, refinishing, or re-coating wooden surfaces.
  • Restoration Work: Restoring or refinishing old or damaged woodwork to restore its original appearance or improve its durability.

3. Woodworking Skills

  • Precision Cutting: Using saws, drills, and other tools to accurately cut wood or other materials to the correct size for construction or repairs.
  • Joinery: Skillfully creating joints (e.g., dovetail, mortise-and-tenon) to join different pieces of wood together in both structural and decorative work.
  • Sanding and Finishing: Sanding wood surfaces to smooth them out and applying finishes (such as paint, varnish, or stain) to protect and enhance the appearance of the wood.

4. Blueprint and Design Interpretation

  • Reading Plans: Interpreting blueprints, sketches, or work orders to understand the scope of work and the measurements required.
  • Design and Customization: Collaborating with designers, architects, or other departments to customize woodwork and furniture according to specific design requirements or project specifications.

5. Safety and Quality Control

  • Adherence to Safety Standards: Following strict safety protocols to prevent accidents when working with tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Inspection and Quality Assurance: Inspecting completed work to ensure it meets quality standards, is structurally sound, and is free from defects.
  • Tool Maintenance: Keeping tools in good working condition and ensuring that they are properly cleaned and stored after use.

6. Customer Service (If Applicable)

  • Communication with Clients: If working in a customer-facing environment, carpenters may need to communicate with clients or management to understand their needs, provide updates, and ensure satisfaction with completed work.
  • Working with Other Departments: In a hotel, restaurant, or corporate setting, carpenters may collaborate with facility management, designers, or other tradespeople to ensure that all work aligns with the overall vision of the project.

7. Knowledge of Materials

  • Material Selection: Understanding the best materials for specific tasks, including different types of wood, plywood, composite materials, and finishes.
  • Sustainability Awareness: Choosing environmentally sustainable materials and practices whenever possible, especially in modern or eco-conscious construction.

8. Time Management and Efficiency

  • Project Scheduling: Managing time efficiently to complete projects on schedule, whether it's building a piece of furniture, performing repairs, or undertaking larger-scale construction tasks.
  • Prioritizing Work: Ensuring that urgent repairs or maintenance requests are prioritized without sacrificing quality on other tasks.

9. Basic Knowledge of Other Trades

  • Collaboration with Other Trades: Having a basic understanding of other trades (e.g., plumbing, electrical work) helps when working in environments where carpentry intersects with other construction and repair work.
  • General Construction Knowledge: Understanding building codes and regulations, especially if working on structural projects or larger renovations.
