Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations and assessments to diagnose mental health conditions.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans based on clinical assessments and patient needs
  • Diagnose mental health disorders based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) criteria.
  • Prescribe medications and monitor their effects, adjusting treatment as necessary.
  • Provide psychotherapy and other therapeutic interventions, including individual and group therapy.
  • Collaborate with psychologists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient records, ensuring compliance with legal and ethical standards.
  • Educate patients and families about mental health conditions, treatment options, and coping strategies.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and stay updated on advances in psychiatric practices.
  • Engage in community outreach and educational initiatives to promote mental health awareness.

Qualifications

  • Medical degree (M.D. or D.O.) from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of a residency program in psychiatry.
  • Board certification in psychiatry
  • Valid medical license
  • Proficient in various therapeutic modalities and psychiatric evaluation techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to establish rapport with patients and families.
  • Diagnosis and Assessment

    • Conducting thorough psychiatric evaluations to assess the patient's mental health history, symptoms, and functioning.
    • Performing physical exams, lab tests, and imaging when necessary to rule out medical conditions or substance use that may be contributing to psychiatric symptoms.
    • Diagnosing a wide range of mental health conditions using established criteria, such as mood disorders, psychotic disorders, anxiety disorders, and personality disorders.
  • Treatment Planning

    • Developing a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to the individual patient’s needs, which may include medication, therapy, lifestyle changes, and other interventions.
    • Providing psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), psychoanalysis, or family therapy to help patients address and manage mental health issues.
    • Prescribing and managing psychiatric medications to stabilize mood, manage symptoms, and support recovery from mental health conditions.
  • Medication Management

    • Monitoring patients on psychiatric medications to assess their effectiveness, manage side effects, and adjust dosages as needed.
    • Educating patients about the potential benefits and risks of medications and working with them to ensure compliance and adherence to treatment.
  • Crisis Intervention

    • Responding to patients in acute psychiatric crises, including those who are suicidal, experiencing psychotic episodes, or exhibiting dangerous behavior.
    • Providing emergency psychiatric evaluations and determining whether a patient requires involuntary hospitalization for safety or treatment.
  • Long-Term Care and Support

    • Offering ongoing support and therapy to patients with chronic mental health conditions, helping them manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.
    • Collaborating with patients and their families to create rehabilitation plans or aftercare services, including community support and social services.
    • Monitoring for relapse or deterioration in patients with long-term conditions like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.
  • Prevention and Health Promotion

    • Educating patients on mental health hygiene, coping mechanisms, and the importance of stress management, sleep, exercise, and nutrition.
    • Providing counseling and support for patients at risk of mental health conditions, such as those with a family history of psychiatric disorders or those exposed to trauma.

Desired candidate profile

  • Diagnostic Expertise

    • Skilled in diagnosing mental health disorders using diagnostic criteria outlined in tools like the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) or the ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases).
    • Expertise in conducting psychiatric evaluations to assess mental health conditions, including interviewing patients, reviewing medical history, and evaluating symptoms.
    • Ability to differentiate between psychological conditions and other physical health conditions that might mimic psychiatric disorders.
  • Knowledge of Mental Health Disorders

    • Proficiency in diagnosing and treating common mental health conditions such as anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and eating disorders.
    • Knowledge of mood disorders, psychotic disorders, personality disorders, neurocognitive disorders, and neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., autism spectrum disorders).
  • Treatment and Management

    • Expertise in prescribing and managing medications, such as antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, anxiolytics, and stimulants for various psychiatric conditions.
    • Ability to integrate psychotherapy into treatment plans, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), psychoanalysis, or family therapy.
    • Skilled in managing medication side effects and polypharmacy for patients on multiple medications.
  • Crisis Management and Emergency Care

    • Proficiency in handling psychiatric emergencies such as suicidal ideation, aggressive behavior, psychosis, or delirium.
    • Ability to work with patients who are in acute psychiatric crisis, providing appropriate intervention and potentially recommending involuntary hospitalization or psychiatric evaluations.
  • Collaboration with Other Healthcare Providers

    • Collaborative skills to work with other professionals like psychologists, social workers, nurses, neurologists, and general practitioners in multidisciplinary care teams.
    • Involved in case management for patients with complex psychiatric needs, ensuring access to necessary treatments, therapy, and social services.
  • Patient-Centered Communication

    • Empathy and communication skills to establish a strong therapeutic alliance with patients, ensuring they feel heard, understood, and supported throughout their treatment.
    • Expertise in discussing sensitive topics like substance abuse, trauma, sexual abuse, self-harm, and family dynamics with patients in a compassionate, non-judgmental manner.
  • Psychopharmacology

    • A deep understanding of how medications affect the brain and body, and the ability to tailor treatment plans based on each patient’s specific condition, history, and preferences.
    • Experience in the use of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for patients with severe depression or other treatment-resistant conditions.
