Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

The Port Captain will act under the responsibility of Fleet Superintendent and assist him as required to operate the Fleet Units controlled by the Company in a safe and efficient manner with particular reference to routine Fleet operations. The key responsibilities of this role include inspections, utilization and operational procedures.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities:

  • Accomplishes department objectives by supervising staff and organizing and monitoring work processes.
  • Direct day to day administration of the fleet operation.
  • Accomplishes staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees.
  • Ensure the readiness and seaworthiness of the fleet.
  • Plans, monitors, and appraises job results.
  • Conducts training and mentoring new joiners.
  • Provide operational and technical support to the crews on board speed boats and pilot boats.
  • Reports any down time to the fleet superintendent.
  • Ensure that all Fleet units is manned as per requirement.
  • Coordinate with the Fleet workshop to close all defects reports.
  • Adhere to SOPs and AD Ports HSEQ.
  • Ensure implementation of SOPs & RA. and full compliance by all crew.
  • Guide, direct and motivate subordinates to work effectively and perform to their best potential.

Qualifications

Educational and Technical Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marine Transportation, Marine Engineering or a relevant field. Master’s degree is a plus.
  • Valid Tug Master certificate issued by an approved Maritime Authority

Language Skills:

  • Excellent English. Arabic is an added advantage

Years of Experience:

  • A minimum of 4-6 years of experience in a similar role

Nature of Experience:

  • Relevant experience in the Main Port including berthing, un-berthing, towing all size and kind of vessels operating ASD and Conventional Propulsion systems.
  • Tug vessel Handling, Crew Management, Visual and Instrument Navigation, Application of radar, GPS and echo sounder in restricted visibility.

Desired candidate profile

1. Maritime Operations Knowledge

  • Vessel Operations: Expertise in the safe loading, unloading, and berthing of vessels.
  • Navigational Knowledge: Understanding of navigational charts, port geography, tides, and currents.
  • Maritime Regulations: Familiarity with international and local maritime laws, including SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea), MARPOL (Marine Pollution), and ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security).

2. Leadership and Management

  • Team Leadership: Managing port staff, including dock workers, supervisors, and marine pilots.
  • Crew Coordination: Supervising the coordination between ship crews, terminal operators, and port authorities.
  • Conflict Resolution: Handling operational or safety disputes and ensuring resolution in line with regulations.

3. Safety and Security Focus

  • Risk Management: Identifying safety hazards and ensuring proper precautions are in place.
  • Emergency Response: Leading response efforts during emergencies such as accidents, spills, or adverse weather conditions.
  • Security Compliance: Ensuring the port complies with safety and security standards set by maritime authorities.

4. Communication and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Port Operations Coordination: Communicating with vessel operators, harbor masters, and logistics teams to ensure smooth port operations.
  • Reporting: Maintaining accurate logs and reports on port activities, vessel arrivals, and cargo handling.
  • Regulatory Liaison: Engaging with customs, immigration, and port authorities to ensure compliance with relevant regulations.

5. Technical and Problem-Solving Skills

  • Equipment Management: Overseeing the use of cranes, tugboats, and other port handling equipment.
  • Problem-Solving: Addressing operational issues such as delays, accidents, or logistical challenges.
  • Data Analysis: Monitoring and analyzing port performance data to optimize operations.
