Roles and responsibilities
-
Risk Assessment and Hazard Identification
- Conduct thorough risk assessments and hazard identification studies to determine potential risks across processes, equipment, and infrastructure.
- Analyze plant operations, systems, and environments to identify potential loss scenarios (e.g., fire, explosion, leakage, equipment failure).
- Use safety tools such as Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) to identify and assess risks.
-
Loss Prevention and Mitigation Strategies
- Develop and implement risk mitigation plans and safety protocols to prevent accidents, losses, and other incidents.
- Recommend engineering solutions, process changes, or safety measures to reduce the likelihood of hazardous events.
- Design and implement fire protection systems, emergency shutdown procedures, and other preventive measures.
- Ensure the installation of safety equipment such as fire alarms, emergency stops, explosion-proof systems, and gas detection systems.
-
Safety and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with industry safety standards, regulatory requirements, and environmental regulations (e.g., OSHA, NFPA, ISO standards, local regulations).
- Create safety manuals, guidelines, and procedures that align with regulatory frameworks to ensure company-wide adherence to safety measures.
- Regularly audit and inspect systems, processes, and equipment to ensure safety measures are followed and equipment is functioning properly.
- Ensure that all team members, contractors, and vendors are trained on safety protocols and loss prevention systems.
-
Incident Investigation and Reporting
- Investigate any incidents, near misses, or safety breaches to identify root causes and propose corrective actions.
- Lead or participate in incident root cause analysis and determine appropriate measures to prevent recurrence.
- Document incidents, lessons learned, and corrective actions to maintain a record of safety performance and inform future practices.
-
Safety Audits and Inspections
- Perform regular safety audits and inspections of facilities, systems, and equipment to ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Conduct emergency drills and exercises (e.g., fire drills, spill response drills) to ensure the readiness of employees and emergency teams.
