- The candidate should be dynamic, enthusiastic, and well-qualified, holding as a minimum a Bachelor’s degree in Education with a SENCO qualification or equivalent is a must, and further post-graduate study in SEND and Inclusion (i.e. Master’s or NASENCo)
- Experience with BTEC Introductory Level and AQA Entry Level in Core subjects.?
- At least 3 years of experience as a SENCO. Experience with exam access arrangements is essential.
- The successful candidate will be someone with strong leadership and good organisational skills who can take responsibility for Inclusion Support Teachers and designated Learning Support Assistants, and who can effectively liaise with relevant staff, external agencies and parents.

Desired candidate profile
1. In-depth Knowledge of Special Educational Needs (SEN)
- Understanding the various types of SEN, including learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, speech and language disorders, and emotional or behavioral difficulties.
- Keeping up to date with research, trends, and educational practices related to SEN.
- Knowledge of how to assess and identify SEN in students and the best ways to support them in a secondary school environment.
2. Leadership and Management Skills
- Leading the SEN Department: Leading a team of teaching assistants, learning support staff, and other professionals to deliver effective support for students with SEN.
- Strategic Planning: Developing and implementing strategies to ensure the needs of students with SEN are met across the school.
- Delegating Responsibilities: Assigning roles, managing resources, and overseeing day-to-day operations of the SEN department.
- Leading CPD: Providing training and professional development for school staff on best practices in SEN support.
3. Knowledge of SEN Legislation and Policies
- Familiarity with national and local educational legislation and policies related to SEN, such as the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Code of Practice.
- Ensuring compliance with laws regarding SEN, safeguarding, and disability rights.
- Advocating for students with SEN and ensuring that their rights to appropriate education are upheld.
4. Collaboration and Teamwork
- Working with Teachers: Collaborating with subject teachers to help adapt the curriculum and teaching strategies for students with SEN.
- Involving Parents and Carers: Engaging with parents to discuss their child’s progress and any challenges they may be facing, and offering guidance and support.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Coordinating with external professionals, such as speech and language therapists, psychologists, and social workers, to provide holistic support for students.
- Student Involvement: Encouraging students with SEN to actively participate in decision-making processes about their learning and support.
5. Individualized Support and Provision
- IEPs and Learning Plans: Overseeing the creation and implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and personalized learning plans for students with SEN.
- Tailoring Teaching: Ensuring that appropriate adjustments are made to the curriculum and teaching strategies to support the individual needs of students with SEN.
- Resource Management: Ensuring that students have access to the appropriate resources, including assistive technologies, learning aids, and classroom modifications.
