This position will be responsible for providing technical service and leadership in a variety of these service offerings, but with responsibility for traffic engineering and transportation planning for a range of development planning stages. The candidate must have in-depth knowledge and experience in at least one of the following areas:
- Acting as the transport planning/ engineering lead on urban planning/ masterplanning projects and providing traffic engineering, planning and parking analyses
- Development and application of a major microscopic transport models (e.g. Legion, VISSIM, VISWALK etc.)
Job Duties
The duties of the Principal Transport Planner/ Engineer fall broadly into two categories – Team Management and Technical Leadership and Management. Key duties are as follows.
Team Management
- Ensure key strategic relationships with internal and external partners and stakeholders are effectively developed, managed and maintained
- Manage, lead and produce technical and financial bids for projects in the region and across other business lines
- Ensure delivery is in line with the Business Line’s corporate objectives, on time and within the agreed budget
- Effectively represent AECOM to relevant government departments, external agencies and other bodies appropriate to the post
- Plan, direct and deliver the services in accordance with appropriate procedures and legislation
- Develop and implement initiatives to enhance AECOM’s Transport Planning services offering, product, and supporting infrastructure (e.g. software, modelling tools, capability statement, etc.)
- Maintain appropriate liaison with the business community, stakeholder and advisory groups
- Maintain a watching brief on best working practices within and beyond local government, and ensure these are effectively communicated to the team
- Identify talent within the transport planning community, and work with the practice leaders A to recruit other transport planners and engineer into the SP&A team to enhance local capabilities and grow the business in accordance with workload
- Liaise with other AECOM geographies to maximize the AECOM offering
- Provide technical supervision and fulfil line management duty to junior staff
Desired candidate profile
- Effectively advise on transport planning and engineering policies and their implementation and the related allocation of resources in relation to all services covered by this post
- Takes the lead on relevant projects in terms of managing the delivery, engaging with the Transportation clients, and internal stakeholders.
- Be aware of and adhere to relevant legislation, codes of practice and departmental policies when planning and directing the delivery of transport modelling related projects in the region
- Continuously improve technical and industry knowledge by participating in forums and other industry related programs
- Research, analyse and report on a range of future mobility modes. Show experience in having assessed future mobility modes their planning attributes and how they translate to engineering design requirements.
- Prepare tender submissions
- Act as Project Manager on delivery of transport planning tasks and projects as necessary
- Develop detailed methodologies for carrying out transportation planning works on multi-disciplinary projects
- Produce guides, case studies and deliver presentations to clients and teams.
- Undertake data recording and analysis tasks
- Manage the preparation of client reports, bringing together the contributions from other specialist areas of the business
- Review internal processes for effectiveness and efficiency and suggest possible areas for improvement where necessary
- Other duties as required
Specific Skills Required
The candidate should have:
- Good understanding of industry practices, including the underlying principles sufficient to carry out and lead transport engineering assessments.
- Knowledge and application of HCM Standards in projects
- Good mathematical background, and ability to handle large data sets with experience in using statistical tools and database software packages such as ACCESS and SPSS will be an advantage
- Good comprehension of transportation modelling and economics
- Working knowledge of GIS packages such as ArcGIS and MapInfo will be an advantage
- Working knowledge of scripting software such as Visual Basic VBA and Python will be an advantage
- A clear appreciation and understanding of fundamental transportation planning principles
- Good report writing and presentational skills
- Good Project Management experience and skills
- Sound commercial acumen and business awareness
