Highways Engineer

Roles and responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of roads and highways projects from conception through to completion.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the integration of road design with surrounding infrastructure.
• Prepare detailed engineering designs, specifications, and cost estimates in accordance with RTA standards.
• Conduct feasibility studies, traffic impact assessments, and environmental assessments.
• Review and approve design calculations, drawings, and documentation produced by junior engineers and consultants.
• Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources to ensure successful project delivery.
• Liaise with government authorities, stakeholders, and clients to secure necessary approvals and permits.
• Stay updated with industry trends, materials, and technologies to ensure best practices in road design.
• Mentor and provide guidance to junior engineers and team members.
  

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
• 8-12 years of experience in a roads and highways design role
• RTA approval or registration as an engineer in Dubai is preferred
• Proficient in relevant design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MX Road).
• Strong understanding of local regulations, standards, and environmental considerations.
• Excellent project management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with team members and stakeholders.

1. Project Management and Leadership

• Project Oversight: Leading and managing the design, construction, and maintenance of road and highway projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and to required specifications.
• Team Leadership: Managing a team of engineers, technicians, and support staff, providing guidance, mentorship, and technical expertise to ensure successful project outcomes.
• Stakeholder Management: Engaging with stakeholders, including clients, contractors, regulatory bodies, and local authorities, to ensure that the project meets their requirements and expectations.
• Resource Allocation: Managing project resources, including personnel, materials, and equipment, to optimize efficiency and ensure the successful delivery of the project.

2. Design and Engineering

• Roadway Design: Designing roadways, highways, and transportation infrastructure, considering factors such as traffic flow, safety, environmental impact, and cost-effectiveness. This includes geometric design (alignment, cross-sections, and grades), pavement design, drainage, and intersections.
• Structural Design: Designing related structures, including bridges, culverts, tunnels, and retaining walls, ensuring that they meet structural integrity, safety, and environmental standards.
• Traffic Engineering: Analyzing traffic data and forecasting traffic demand to design roads that accommodate expected traffic volumes and minimize congestion.
• Geotechnical Engineering: Working with geotechnical engineers to assess soil conditions and ensure that foundations and pavement structures are designed to accommodate the site's characteristics.
• Environmental Considerations: Ensuring that projects comply with environmental regulations and sustainability practices, including erosion control, stormwater management, and minimizing environmental impact during construction.

3. Regulatory and Standards Compliance

• Adherence to Codes and Standards: Ensuring that all road and highway designs meet local, national, and international standards, codes, and regulations, such as AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) standards or relevant local standards.
• Safety Regulations: Ensuring that the design, construction, and operation of roadways adhere to safety standards, addressing issues such as road signage, pedestrian safety, and accident prevention.
• Permitting and Approvals: Coordinating with regulatory agencies to obtain necessary permits and approvals, ensuring compliance with zoning, environmental, and construction laws.
