Roles and responsibilities
- Review contract requirement related to welding. Provide comments/feedback to commercial and production departments on welding topics on project’s specification/procedure/tender.
- Ensure yard compliance with national and international standards, class rules and legislations.
- Liaise with third party inspection authorities whenever required for the project and issuing any necessary work orders for inspections and / or testing.
- Plan, organize, coordinating and controlling activities of WPQR qualification and preparation of relevant welding procedure specification. Updating and maintaining the files of approved WPS’s.
- Authorize to stop processes if they do not meet specified requirements.
- Raise non-conformity report, performing root cause analysis and approving re-work processes.
- Collate, updating and filing, all relevant to welding engineering documents by project.
- Issue, maintain and revalidating welders’ qualification test records (WQTR).
- Provide expertise in the development of specific procedures, techniques, check lists, sequences or any other welding related requirements.
- Carryout Material grade identification and material confirmation tests.
- Liaise with the ent, Quality Engineers/Supervisors/Inspectors, Project Managers, Production Supervisors, Client’s Representatives and Classification Surveyors whenever required for the project.
- Prepare procedures and work instructions related to heat treatment activities.
- Oversee process of welding and welding related equipment validation and calibration.
- Select, approve and quantity estimation of welding consumables and preparation of relevant work instruction, Batch testing of consumable (if required).
- Implement the day-to-day operations assigned for the department/section to ensure compliance with the established standards and procedures.

Desired candidate profile
- Welding Process Knowledge: Proficiency in various welding processes such as MIG (Metal Inert Gas), TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas), SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding), FCAW (Flux-Cored Arc Welding), and submerged arc welding (SAW).
- Material Science: In-depth understanding of materials and how they respond to different welding techniques, including knowledge of alloys, metals, and composite materials.
- Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS): Creating, reviewing, and implementing WPS to ensure that welding operations are conducted according to best practices and industry standards.
- Weld Joint Design: Knowledge of designing welded joints, including butt joints, fillet welds, and flange connections, ensuring strength, efficiency, and structural integrity.
- Heat Treatment: Understanding of heat treatment processes such as post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) to relieve stresses, prevent cracking, and improve material properties.
- Welding Equipment: Familiarity with welding machines, automation equipment, and tools used in welding processes, including CNC welding machines, robots, and welding power sources.
Welding Standards and Codes
- Industry Codes and Standards: Knowledge of relevant welding codes and standards, such as those from the American Welding Society (AWS), ASME, ISO 3834, API, or EN standards.
- Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC): Ensuring that welding processes meet the required quality standards, conducting inspections, and implementing corrective actions when necessary.
- Non-Destructive Testing (NDT): Familiarity with NDT methods such as ultrasonic testing (UT), radiographic testing (RT), magnetic particle testing (MT), and dye penetrant testing (PT) to assess the quality of welds.
- Weld Certification: Knowledge of welding qualification standards and certifications for welders (e.g., ASME, AWS, ISO 9606) and ensuring that welding personnel meet required competencies.
- Compliance and Regulatory Requirements: Ensuring that all welding activities comply with local, national, and international regulatory and safety standards.
Welding Design and Optimization
- Welding Design Principles: Applying principles of welding design to optimize joint configurations, minimize distortion, and maximize strength while minimizing cost.
- Process Improvement: Continuously evaluating and improving welding processes to increase efficiency, reduce waste, and improve the overall quality of welded products.
- Welding Simulation: Using welding simulation software to model heat distribution, stress, and distortion in welded joints, optimizing the process before actual production.
- Cost Management: Managing welding costs by selecting the most efficient processes and materials, reducing wastage, and improving overall production timelines.
