Roles and responsibilities
A School Nurse plays a critical role in promoting the health and well-being of students in an educational setting. They are responsible for providing immediate care in case of injuries or illnesses, managing chronic conditions, and promoting overall health and wellness within the school. In addition to caring for individual students, school nurses also help create a healthy school environment by educating students and staff about health-related issues and helping to implement school health policies.
Key Skills of a School Nurse:
1. Medical Knowledge and Clinical Skills
- First Aid and Emergency Care: Expertise in providing first aid for injuries, accidents, and medical emergencies, such as cuts, sprains, seizures, asthma attacks, and anaphylaxis.
- Health Assessments: Ability to conduct health assessments, such as checking students’ vital signs, performing screenings for vision, hearing, and other conditions, and identifying potential health concerns.
- Managing Chronic Conditions: Ability to manage chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, allergies, and other medical needs that may require ongoing care during school hours.
- Administering Medication: Competence in administering prescribed medications, such as inhalers, insulin injections, or EpiPens, and ensuring that students follow their medical care plans.
2. Health and Safety Awareness
- Health Screenings: Conducting regular health screenings, including vision, hearing, growth, and development assessments, to identify potential health issues early.
- Infection Control: Understanding infection control measures, including managing outbreaks of contagious diseases, ensuring that proper hygiene protocols are followed, and maintaining a clean and safe environment.
- Health and Safety Protocols: Knowledge of school health policies, including emergency procedures, safety protocols, and guidelines for managing student health risks (e.g., allergies, mental health crises).
3. Confidentiality and Record-Keeping
- Confidentiality: Handling sensitive health information with the utmost confidentiality and respecting student privacy in line with medical and legal standards (such as HIPAA in the U.S. or GDPR in Europe).
- Health Records: Maintaining accurate and up-to-date health records for all students, including immunization records, treatment logs, and any incidents requiring medical attention.
- Documentation of Incidents: Recording incidents such as injuries, illnesses, or medication administration and reporting them as required to parents, teachers, and relevant school staff.
4. Communication and Interpersonal Skills
- Liaison with Parents: Communicating effectively with parents or guardians about their child’s health, treatment plans, and any ongoing health issues.
- Working with School Staff: Collaborating with teachers, administrators, and other school personnel to create individualized health plans, discuss student health concerns, and promote a healthy school environment.
- Student Interaction: Building rapport with students, making them feel comfortable and confident in seeking help for their health needs. Creating a safe space where students can discuss health-related concerns without fear of judgment.
5. Health Education and Promotion
- Promoting Healthy Lifestyles: Educating students about healthy lifestyle choices, such as proper nutrition, physical activity, mental health awareness, and hygiene practices.
- Preventive Health Education: Teaching students about the importance of preventive health practices, such as immunizations, handwashing, sleep hygiene, and safe practices to avoid injuries.
- Mental Health Support: Supporting students' mental health by offering advice, managing stress, and referring students to additional mental health resources or counseling when necessary.

Job Specification
- Qualified Nurse aged 25-45 years with school/ nursery nurse experience.
- Must have valid DHA certification.
- At least 4 years nursing experience or more
- Good communication skills
- Basic MS Office knowledge for maintaining records and filing system
