Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

A Server plays an essential role in the dining experience, providing customer service and ensuring guests have a pleasant meal at a restaurant, café, or other food service establishment. The server’s responsibilities go beyond simply taking orders—they are key to creating a welcoming atmosphere, ensuring customer satisfaction, and maintaining a smooth operation in the dining area.

Here are the key skills and responsibilities required for a Server:

1. Customer Service Skills

  • Welcoming Guests: Greeting guests warmly as they arrive and ensuring they feel comfortable.
  • Active Listening: Paying attention to guests' needs, requests, and concerns, and addressing them promptly and effectively.
  • Attentiveness: Checking in on guests regularly to ensure they have everything they need and to address any concerns before they escalate.
  • Problem Solving: Handling complaints or issues with professionalism, working to resolve them quickly and to the guest's satisfaction.

2. Menu Knowledge

  • Understanding the Menu: Being familiar with the full menu, including ingredients, preparation methods, and dietary restrictions (e.g., gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan).
  • Specials and Promotions: Informing guests of daily specials, limited-time offers, or new menu items, and making suggestions based on their preferences.
  • Recommendations: Offering suggestions on drinks, appetizers, main courses, or desserts, based on the guest’s tastes and preferences.

3. Order Taking and Accuracy

  • Accurate Order Taking: Taking accurate food and drink orders, ensuring all special requests, modifications, or dietary restrictions are communicated clearly to the kitchen or bar.
  • Order Delivery: Delivering food and drinks to the correct table in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Memory Skills: Remembering guests’ orders, preferences, or past requests for personalized service, especially for regular customers.

4. Communication Skills

  • Clear Communication: Effectively communicating with kitchen staff, bartenders, and other servers to ensure smooth service.
  • Professional Tone: Maintaining a polite, friendly, and professional tone with guests, even in stressful or busy situations.
  • Team Coordination: Working with other servers and staff to coordinate orders and ensure that service is efficient.
