Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

A Pediatric Orthopedic Specialist is a medical doctor who specializes in diagnosing, treating, and managing musculoskeletal conditions in children, including those involving bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Pediatric orthopedists focus on conditions specific to growing children, such as congenital deformities, growth-related issues, sports injuries, and fractures. They work closely with families to provide comprehensive care for children with orthopedic needs.

Key Skills for a Pediatric Orthopedic Specialist

  1. In-Depth Knowledge of Pediatric Musculoskeletal Development

    • Understanding the unique aspects of pediatric bone and joint development, including how growth plates (epiphyseal plates) work, and how they differ from those in adults.
    • Recognizing normal growth patterns and distinguishing between developmental variations and pathologic conditions.
  2. Diagnosing Pediatric Orthopedic Conditions

    • Proficient in diagnosing musculoskeletal disorders in children, such as scoliosis, hip dysplasia, clubfoot, limb length discrepancies, and congenital deformities.
    • Skilled in interpreting imaging studies (X-rays, MRIs, CT scans) to identify fractures, deformities, or other bone/joint conditions.
  3. Non-Surgical Treatment Expertise

    • Expertise in providing non-surgical treatments, such as physical therapy, casting, bracing, and the management of fractures and strains.
    • Implementing early interventions to correct deformities and prevent further complications, often in collaboration with other healthcare providers like pediatricians or physical therapists.
  4. Surgical Skills

    • Surgical skills to perform procedures such as spinal fusions, bone realignment (osteotomy), arthroscopy, casting, and corrective surgeries for congenital deformities.
    • Experience in delicate surgeries that require precise techniques to minimize the risk of complications and preserve growth potential in children.
  5. Growth and Development Knowledge

    • Understanding of how musculoskeletal issues in children are influenced by growth and development. For example, managing conditions that are related to growth spurts, such as Osgood-Schlatter disease, or Sever’s disease.
    • Knowledge of how injuries and treatments can affect the child's long-term growth and joint health.
  6. Patient and Family Communication

    • Communicating complex orthopedic issues in an understandable and compassionate way to children and their families.
    • Providing education on injury prevention, rehabilitation, and post-treatment care, helping parents understand treatment plans, and addressing any concerns or fears.
  7. Multidisciplinary Collaboration

    • Collaborating with physical therapists, pediatricians, occupational therapists, sports medicine specialists, and other healthcare professionals to create comprehensive treatment plans.
    • Working with other specialists in cases where orthopedic issues are related to or caused by systemic conditions (e.g., muscular dystrophy or cerebral palsy).

Desired candidate profile

Provide exceptional surgical and non-surgical treatment for children experiencing musculoskeletal issues, including congenital disorders, trauma-related injuries, and diseases of the bones, joints, and muscles.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and diagnose pediatric orthopedic conditions and injuries.
  • Perform surgical procedures to address orthopedic issues in children.
  • Provide non-surgical treatment options, including braces, casts, and physical therapy.
  • Collaborate with other physicians and healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and their families, educating them on treatment options and care plans.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in pediatric orthopedic surgery.
  • Participate in on-call rotation as required.

Qualifications

  • Board certified or board eligible in Orthopedic Surgery with a subspecialty in Pediatrics.
  • Proven experience as a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon.
  • Demonstrated surgical skills and knowledge of child-related illnesses and treatments.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with children and their families.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and medical innovations.
