Job Purpose
Alongside the Scenic Construction Tutor, develop an efficient Scenic Workshop operating at
the industry level in Scenic Building and manage the workshop output to a world-leading
standard.
Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Scenic Construction Tutor, the Assistant Carpenter shall execute the
following tasks and responsibilities:
Direct and maintain the physical operations of the Scenic Construction Workshop. This
includes but is not limited to:
o Machine maintenance
o Material handling and inventory
o Tool handling and inventory
o Assist in constructing and assembling scenic elements, ensuring they meet the
design specifications and safety standards.
o Assisting with production, shop improvement, and other relevant Academyrequested
projects.
o Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to maintain a safe working
environment.
o Assist in setting up and dismantling scenic pieces on location, ensuring they
are properly installed and secured.
o Oversee and direct student build crews for production in conjunction and
reporting to the Scenic Construction Tutor.
o Maintaining a high quality of build and finish of all scenic elements.
Key Interactions
Responsible to the Scenic Construction Tutor and works closely with The Production
Manager and the Production Arts Department.
Knowledge and Experience
Training and Tuition
Assist the Scenic Construction Tutor as needed in lessons, often providing a second
set of eyes, ears, and hands to handle larger groups of students.
Supervision and guidance of students, fulfilling a construction role on Academy
productions and projects, working with external creatives and the Academy
Production Manager.
Productions
Review the drawing package created by the Scenic Construction Tutor or Production
Manager and discuss all construction methods per current industry standards.
Review and create a build schedule as laid out by the Scenic Construction Tutor.
Support the build on the shop floor for all elements, maintaining quality and
management/oversight of all students fulfilling a construction role as well as overhire
carpenters brought in to support construction.
Maintain daily communication with the Scenic Construction Tutor to ensure scenic
elements are being built to specification and on schedule, and to clarify any issues or
questions that may arise.
Lead crews of students during the load-in/fit-up process into the theatre.
Assist with any scenic rigging elements during build and load-in/fit up.
Perform daily maintenance and safety checks on production sets o
production.
Perform any modifications or repairs necessary on production sets, in conjunction
with Students as often as possible.
Facilities
Work alongside the Scenic Construction Tutor to build out the Scenic Construction
Workshop.
Perform daily, weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly maintenance as required for tools.
Maintain the shop in good working order and cleanliness.
Finance
Work to stay within any type of builds given material and time parameters.
Health and Safety
To engage with relevant Health and Safety training regarding the teaching and
delivery of construction.
To be familiar with, and comply with current Health and Safety regulations relevant
to the industry.
To ensure that personnel and students adhere to safe working practices.
