Desired candidate profile

1. Teaching and Instruction

  • Course Development and Teaching: Designing, delivering, and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses related to biomedical engineering. These may include subjects such as biomaterials, biomechanics, biomedical instrumentation, medical imaging, tissue engineering, rehabilitation engineering, and bioinformatics.
  • Classroom and Lab Instruction: Conducting lectures, seminars, and practical lab sessions. Labs are particularly important in biomedical engineering, where students work on projects related to device design, testing, and simulations.
  • Curriculum Enhancement: Continuously updating course content to reflect the latest technological advancements, research findings, and regulatory developments in biomedical engineering. Ensuring students are equipped with the most up-to-date knowledge and skills.
  • Graduate Supervision: Mentoring graduate students in their thesis or dissertation research, helping them develop research questions, design experiments, and analyze results. This often involves guiding students in designing and developing prototypes or conducting simulations.
  • Interdisciplinary Teaching: Collaborating with faculty from other departments (such as biology, physics, or medicine) to teach interdisciplinary courses that combine principles from engineering and life sciences.

2. Research and Scholarly Activity

  • Conducting Research: Engaging in research projects aimed at solving real-world problems in healthcare. Topics can include biomaterials, medical devices, regenerative medicine, drug delivery systems, wearable health technology, tissue engineering, and medical robotics.
  • Publication: Publishing research findings in reputable, peer-reviewed journals and presenting at academic and professional conferences. Research publications are crucial for contributing to the academic body of knowledge and establishing credibility in the field.
  • Grant Writing: Writing research proposals and securing funding from government agencies (such as the NIH or NSF), private industry, or non-profit organizations to support biomedical engineering projects.
  • Collaboration: Working with medical professionals, industry partners, and researchers in related fields (e.g., mechanical engineering, materials science, and biology) to develop innovative solutions that address unmet needs in healthcare.
  • Applied Research: Some research efforts may involve developing prototypes or working with hospitals and healthcare facilities to test new devices or systems in real-world clinical environments.

3. Industry Engagement and Professional Development

  • Industry Collaboration: Developing partnerships with medical device companies, hospitals, and research institutions. This can involve consulting, joint research projects, or internships for students in the biomedical engineering field.
  • Consulting: Many Associate Professors in Biomedical Engineering may work as consultants for medical device companies, providing expertise in areas such as product development, regulatory compliance, and biomedical device testing.
  • Professional Development: Staying up-to-date with new trends, technologies, and regulatory standards in the biomedical engineering field by attending industry conferences, workshops, and continuing education programs.

4. Service to the Institution and Community

  • Academic Committees: Participating in departmental and university-wide committees, such as those focused on curriculum development, faculty hiring, student affairs, and accreditation processes.
  • Peer Review: Reviewing articles and research proposals for academic journals, funding agencies, and conferences. Peer review is an important aspect of maintaining the quality and integrity of research in biomedical engineering.
  • Public Outreach: Engaging in outreach programs to inform the public and future students about the field of biomedical engineering. This could include hosting workshops, giving talks at schools, or participating in community health initiatives.
