  • A Practical Nurse (also known as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in some regions) is a healthcare professional who provides basic nursing care under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) or physicians. Practical nurses work in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient clinics, and home care, playing an essential role in patient care.

    Key Skills for a Practical Nurse

  • Patient Care Skills

    • Providing basic nursing care, such as administering medications, monitoring vital signs, and assisting with personal hygiene.
    • Helping patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as eating, dressing, and mobility.
  • Clinical Skills

    • Proficiency in taking vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure).
    • Assisting with procedures such as wound care, catheter insertion, and giving injections or vaccines.

    • Effectively communicating with patients, families, and healthcare teams to provide the best care possible.
    • Documenting patient care and maintaining accurate medical records.
  • Compassion and Empathy

    • Working effectively with RNs, doctors, and other healthcare staff to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients.

  • Patient Safety and Hygiene

    • Ensuring infection control practices, including hand hygiene and proper sanitization of equipment.
    • Being vigilant about patient safety, such as preventing falls, bedsores, or medication errors.

Desired candidate profile

Responsibilities of a Practical Nurse

  1. Monitoring Patient Health

    • Taking and recording vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
    • Observing patients for any changes in condition, such as signs of infection or complications, and reporting them to a registered nurse or physician.
  2. Assisting with Daily Activities

    • Helping patients with bathing, grooming, dressing, and other personal care needs.
    • Assisting patients with mobility, including helping them walk or move from one position to another.
  3. Administering Medications

    • Administering prescribed medications to patients, following the doctor’s orders and hospital protocols.
    • Monitoring patients for any adverse reactions to medications and reporting these to medical staff.
  4. Wound Care and Dressings

    • Changing bandages or dressing wounds, observing for signs of infection, and following specific wound care procedures.
    • Assisting with the care of surgical sites or chronic wounds like pressure ulcers.
  5. Providing Patient Education

    • Educating patients about their health conditions, prescribed treatments, and self-care routines.
    • Giving guidance on how to manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or asthma.
  6. Documentation and Record Keeping

    • Keeping accurate and up-to-date records of patient care, vital signs, medications, and any changes in condition.
    • Documenting nursing interventions and communicating them to other team members.
  7. Collaborating with Healthcare Teams

    • Working with RNs, doctors, therapists, and other healthcare providers to develop and implement patient care plans.
    • Assisting in assessments and participating in patient care meetings.
  8. Assisting with Procedures

    • Assisting with diagnostic tests, medical procedures, or surgeries under the supervision of a physician or RN.
    • Preparing patients for medical tests or procedures and providing emotional support.
  9. Maintaining a Safe and Clean Environment

    • Ensuring that patient rooms and common areas are clean and safe.
    • Following infection control protocols and maintaining a hygienic environment for patient care.
