Job Description

Roles and responsibilities

Position Overview: The Shuttering Carpenter is responsible for constructing, installing, and maintaining formwork for concrete structures within petrochemical facilities. This role ensures that formwork is built to specifications and adheres to safety standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Construct and assemble formwork for concrete pouring, including walls, columns, and slabs.

Read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings to determine project requirements.

Ensure the accuracy and alignment of formwork to specifications.

Collaborate with project managers and other trades to coordinate construction activities.

Maintain tools and equipment, ensuring they are in good working condition.

Inspect completed formwork for quality and safety before concrete is poured.

Follow all safety regulations and procedures to minimize risks on-site.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent; certification in carpentry or a related field preferred.

Proven experience as a shuttering carpenter, particularly in industrial or petrochemical settings.

Strong knowledge of concrete formwork techniques and materials.

Proficient in using carpentry tools and equipment.

Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift and handle heavy materials and equipment.

Willingness to work in various environments, including outdoor and industrial settings.

  • Woodworking and Joinery:

    • Proficiency in using hand tools (e.g., saws, hammers, chisels) and power tools (e.g., drills, routers, planers).
    • Expertise in different joinery techniques, such as dovetail, mortise and tenon, and butt joints.
    • Knowledge of woodworking materials, including types of wood, plywood, MDF, and composite materials.
  • Mathematical and Measurement Skills:

    • Strong skills in measuring, calculating dimensions, angles, and proportions accurately.
    • Use of measuring tools such as tape measures, calipers, levels, and squares.
    • Ability to translate measurements into real-world construction tasks.

A Carpenter is a skilled tradesperson responsible for constructing, installing, and repairing structures, frameworks, and fixtures made from wood, plywood, and other materials. Carpenters work in a variety of industries, including residential, commercial, and industrial construction, as well as in manufacturing and furniture making. The role requires a combination of technical skills, creativity, and attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities of a Carpenter:

  1. Reading and Interpreting Blueprints and Plans:

    • Understand architectural blueprints, sketches, and technical drawings to determine the specifications and measurements of the project.
    • Convert the designs into real-world measurements and calculations for the material needs and construction.
  2. Cutting, Shaping, and Assembling Wood:

    • Use hand tools (e.g., saws, hammers, chisels) and power tools (e.g., circular saws, jigsaws, routers) to cut, shape, and join wood and other materials.
    • Measure, cut, and assemble structural components, such as beams, columns, doors, windows, stairs, and cabinetry.
  3. Constructing and Installing Frameworks:

    • Build the framework for buildings, including walls, roofs, and floors.
    • Construct wooden forms to hold concrete for foundations or large structural projects.
    • Install doors, windows, stairs, cabinetry, and other interior fixtures.
  4. Finishing Work:

    • Sand, stain, paint, or apply finishes to woodwork to improve appearance and durability.
    • Install trim, baseboards, and crown molding, as well as decorative elements like wainscoting.
  5. Framing and Structural Work:

    • Construct the wooden frames of homes, buildings, and other structures.
    • Build sub-flooring, decking, and roof trusses.
    • Ensure structures are level, square, and aligned during the framing process.
  6. Maintenance and Repair:

    • Repair or replace damaged woodwork or structures, including rotting wood or damaged beams.
    • Modify existing wooden structures for renovations or improvements.
    • Inspect buildings for potential repairs and maintenance needs.
