- Developing plans for new facilities or updating existing ones to meet current regulatory standards
- Inspecting facility conditions such as noise levels and lighting to ensure compliance with regulatory standards
- Conducting research on new technologies that may improve the field of instrumentation engineering or applying existing technologies in new ways
- Conducting tests on equipment performance to ensure it meets specifications set by the manufacturer
- Designing, installing, maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting control systems used in industrial settings such as oil refineries or chemical manufacturing plants
- Designing new equipment using computer aided drafting (CAD) software or other engineering tools such as computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software or robotics programming language
- Creating computer models to simulate the response of systems to various stimuli in order to predict how they will behave under different conditions
- Designing and building control panels for industrial machinery such as oil rigs or chemical manufacturing plants
- Performing other duties related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment used in industrial settings
