Part of Pennsylvania's Commonwealth System of Higher Education, Temple has nine campuses in the Philadelphia area, as well as in Tokyo and Rome and educational programs in China, Greece, France, Israel, and the UK. About 40,000 students are enrolled in Temple's 320 academic programs. Temple's Health Sciences Center includes Temple University Hospital and schools that teach medicine and dentistry. The system has a student-teacher ratio of about 21:1. Dr. Russell Conwell founded Temple University in 1884; it was incorporated as Temple University in 1907.
