The Center for Smart Engineering Materials (CSEM) at New York University Abu Dhabi invites applications for a Research Assistant position to support ongoing research in the design development and characterization of innovative and multifunctional construction materials including self-sensing and self-healing systems with applications in infrastructure oil and gas and energy-efficient construction.
- The successful candidate will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of postdoctoral researchers faculty members graduate students and undergraduate students on a range of projects including:
- Investigation of self-healing cementitious materials including chemical and bio-based approaches (e.g. bio-mineralization encapsulated agents).
- Characterization of self-sensing materials including their electrical and mechanical behavior under various stressors;Contribution to life-cycle assessment (LCA) and life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) of novel materials to evaluate their environmental and economic impacts;
- Support in experimental design data collection and analysis and dissemination of findings through reports and publications.
Qualifications:
- A bachelors or masters degree in Civil Engineering Materials Science Chemistry or a closely related field.
- Prior experience in materials synthesis especially from industrial byproducts or brine sources and in construction material characterization.
- Familiarity with life-cycle assessment (LCA) tools and methodologies.
- Exposure to smart materials self-healing technologies or sensor-integrated cementitious systems is a strong plus.
- Strong laboratory skills data analysis capabilities and a collaborative mindset.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with AC impedance spectroscopy electrical resistivity measurements or chemical durability testing.
- Basic programming skills (e.g. MATLAB Python) for data handling and sensor signal analysis.
- Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research and the ability to support multiple concurrent projects.
