BACKGROUND
- Accountable for the proactive monitoring, support, maintenance, and ongoing housekeeping of all Group databases, whether developed internally or by a third-party provider.
- Subject Matter Expert for design, maintenance, and support of a range of databases and database technologies and tools to industry standards, responsible for the operational performance, integrity, and security of the databases.
THE OPPORTUNITY
You will develop, maintain, and ensure adherence to the Group s database operational standards and controls including management, archiving, backups, recovery, monitoring and alerting, with input into Database Technology Reference Architectures owned by the IT Architecture function.
As well as Installing and upgrading the database server and application tools, running validation checks, allocating systems storage, and planning future storage requirements, and modifying the database structure, as necessary, from information provided by the Project Delivery team, third parties and as a result of proactive health checks.
Your Role
- Develop, maintain, and ensure adherence to the Group s database operational standards and controls including management, archiving, backups, recovery, monitoring and alerting, with input into Database Technology Reference Architectures owned by the IT Architecture function.
- Assist the Project Delivery and IT Architecture database design teams; advising on industry best practice, data security, integrity, and optimising performance, and provide approval on database design functional specifications.
- Install and upgrade the database server and application tools, running validation checks, allocating systems storage and planning future storage requirements, and modifying the database structure, as necessary, from information provided by the Project Delivery team, third parties and as a result of proactive health checks.
- Enrol users and maintain system security ensuring compliance with database vendor license agreement.
- Control and monitor user access to the database, monitoring and optimising the performance of the database, planning for backup and recovery of database information, maintaining archived data, backing up and restoring databases and contacting database vendor for technical support.
- Respond to monitoring feedback and manage alerts to minimise disruption to services, working to agreed rotas covering 24x7x365, meeting agreed Operations Level Agreements (OLAs) and Service Level Agreements (SLAs) as appropriate.
- Accountable for the definition, design, implementation, and continuous improvement of proactive monitoring and alerting of thresholds in database efficiency and performance, and as required, undertaking remedial actions.
- Adhere to Data Architecture and Information Security controls thereby sustaining the security and integrity of the data. - Creating complex query definitions that allow data to be extracted and communicated in a controlled and secure manner and guide technical colleagues as required on best practice/how to input and extract data.
- Provide risk assessment as input to Change process requests for change, and once authorised, through the change process change, updating existing production/live databases.
- Provide second/third-line incident support and meet the incident service level agreements as advised by the Service Desk and fulfil standard service requests as communicated by the Service Desk.
- Maintain knowledge of industry standards and best practice to ensure optimal IT services, solutions, and processes across the Group.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of IT processes and procedures.
- Respond flexibly to any necessary changes in work priorities and undertake other duties when required to support the effective operation of the service.
- Ensure that all information security requirements, including data protection, are met in accordance with the Group s policy, procedures, and statutory requirements.

Essential
- Understanding of structured query language (SQL).
- Knowledge of relational database management systems (RDMS) (e.g. Microsoft SQL or MySQL), object orientated database management systems (OODBMS) and XML database management systems.
- Knowledge of structured query language (SQL) e.g. SQL/PSM or Transact-SQL. General understanding of distributed computing architectures, e.g. Client-server model, operating systems e.g. Windows or Linux, storage technologies and networking.
- Good knowledge of routine maintenance, recovery, and handling failover of a database.
- Experience of database software, tools and web applications.
- Up-to-date knowledge of technology and the Data Protection Act.
- Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment, where the technology is constantly changing.
- Experience of defining and, adherence to development standards tools and techniques.
