Job Purpose
The school nurse has a multifaceted role with the school setting one that supports the physical mental emotional and social health of students that promotes success in the learning process. It is the breadth of nursing activities contained within the role of the school nurse and the unique nonmedical setting that differentiates school nursing from other nursing specialties.
The role requires effective communication and health promotion education; to encourage and maintain healthy lifestyles and a healthy school environment.
To maintain good order and discipline amongst the students and safeguard their health and safety when they are on school premises and when they are engaged in authorized school activities offsite (in line with policy).
Job Responsibilities
- Administer nursing care including first aid to students and staff as required.
- Assume responsibility for annual health assessments for every child. Assessing general standard of health with special attention given to any abnormality that is likely to affect the childs development or capacity to learn.
- Develop and offer health promotion and preventive advice programs to the Head Nurse to ensure a healthy and safe environment for all students and staff.
- To act as first responder to any medical emergencies occurring on School premises.
- To provide basic medical care to students in the event of injury or acute illness whilst on school premises and allow them to return to class as soon as possible where appropriate.
- To assess referrals made by teaching staff which have been escalated using both the relevant Triage structure and First Aid Unit (FAU) attendance policy.
- To administer medication to students and staff in accordance with school policies and obtaining valid parental consent.
- To monitor students own emergency / personal medication and liaise with parents in accordance with the Management of expired emergency medication policy.
- To make necessary transport arrangements where required for a student or member of staff to safely travel home or to an alternative care setting (i.e. GP / Hospital).
- To maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive communications and documentation and keep an uptodate record of students and staff with medical conditions.
- To update students medical records admissions or withdrawals throughout the academic year.
- To annually measure and record Growth Monitoring and Visual Acuity in compliance with the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) guidelines and inform parents of any concerns.
- To discuss logistics with field trip coordinators and prepare relevant first aid kits care plans and medication as indicated.
- To maintain a daily log to list students who attend the first aid unit as per the Qatar Council for Health Practitioners (QCHP).
- To always work within the NMC and QCHP Code of Conduct and Professional Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice.

- A clear understanding of professional responsibility accountability and working within the personal scope of practice and limitations.

- 3 years of experience as a Registered Nurse
