In order to fill this role effectively the person taking on the role will need to have a range of qualities, competencies and experience. The Teacher ofEAL & English Acquisitonshould be an inspirational, passionate and adaptable educator and a creative and innovative curriculum leader.He/Sheshould be an outstanding motivator, learner, administrator and communicator, with excellent interpersonal skills, and should be capable of leading an area of learning and preparing students for international programmes in a stimulating, challenging and well-organised learning environment.

Knowledge and Skills.He/Sheshould:

  • model the behaviours and values promoted by ISL Qatar and act as a role model for colleagues and students
  • possess excellent communication skills and be willing to adapt to the demands of an international school, in particular he/she should be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing in English.
  • have the ability to manage a diverse and demanding workload
  • have a high level of understanding of current research as to how children learn and possess the ability to motivate students to perform at their best
  • through differentiated instruction, and by using a variety of styles, be able to inspire mixed culture students with specific English Language needs, by creating challenging and engaging learning opportunities
  • be able to participate fully in an expanding IB school and in particular help to develop the team spirit
  • have a high level of awareness of current developments and research in the field of English Language Support.
  1. Responsibilities.

  • To implement theEAL/ESLcurricula and schemes of work for students throughout the school.
  • To liaise with the Head ofSecondaryand theMYPteamsand the curriculum leadersto ensure effective delivery of the curriculum to specified classes, including selecting resources and managing them efficiently in the classroom
  • To participate in the design, development, implementation and review of theEAL/ESL curriculum
  • To participate in the design, development, implementation and review of assessment and reporting systems
  • To promotethehealth and safety of assigned classes
  • To participate inprofessional development and contribute toregularstafftraining/meetings
  • To encourage the team spirit in the primaryschool anddevelop linkswith colleagues across theschool
  • To contribute to community service and global citizenship goals
  • To contribute tothe extra-curricular activities programme of the school
  • To contribute to the development of a positive attitude between the primary/secondaryschool and the wider community through cooperative relations,publications, competitions etc.
  • To enhance the professional standing of the teaching body
  1. Specific Responsibilities.The successful candidate will assume this post at a crucial stage in the development ofISL Qatar. The following list gives an indication of some of the specific current matters to be addressed.

  • To participate in the current development of theMYP, addressing matters arising from our PYP& MYPauthorisation report
  • Touse technology to support EAL/ESL learning,especially throughuse of aVirtual Learning Environment (ManageBac)
  • To participate in the on-going accreditation process with the Council of International Schools (CIS) and New England Associationof Schools and Colleges (NEASC)
  • To participate in development of Assessment for Learning (AFL) and Understanding by Design (UBD)
  • To participate in the development of the new pastoral programmes

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree
  • Qualified teacher status appropriate to the teaching duties to be undertaken.
  • Experience in teaching English as Second or Additional Language.
