About Technion

In 1924, the first class at the Technion, which numbered 16 students, opened, leaving the first university in Israel. The first building was located in a place that would later become the Hadar neighborhood in Haifa. The water was pumped from a well dug in a spot specifically for the Technion's needs. Ahead of the opening, there was a heated debate about the language of study at the Technion: Many thought that teaching should take place in German because of the paucity of Hebrew-speaking lecturers, Hebrew textbooks and professional Hebrew terms. The decision to teach in German triggered a wave of resistance and protests in the young community in Israel, and the struggle led to a change of decision and the establishment of Hebrew as the language of instruction at the Technion. This event was considered the culmination of the war of the languages that took place in the Hebrew community at the time, and its results set Hebrew as the sole language of the community.
